This is not a beginner's router, but it is not terribly difficult to configure. I had an issue with configuring it using Firefox, which ended up being because of my Adblock Plus (ABP) add-on. I resolved that problem by disabling ADP for the configuration URL. MS Edge browser works just fine for configuration.
There is a wizard available at first setup. For noobs, this makes things a lot easier, but it is only available if you haven't manually changed other settings (e.g. port forwarding). I have some additional configurations that I have to make in my environment, primarily port forwarding and static addresses for some devices. It was very easy to set that up, once I figured where to do it. I configured while it was connected to my laptop, then I was able to just pop it in between my modem (eth0) and switch (eth1), connected the other devices to the remaining ports, and voila everything worked. I use the regular power adapter, though it has the option to power through port 0 via PoE (I think that is what it is called).
Just going through the Ubiquiti OS, I found a lot of flexibility with this router. This appears to be a commercial grade device. It has a lot of capabilities that I will probably never use, but it is working great. The price is very reasonable.
I was tempted to install OpenWRT as an alternative to the Ubiquiti firmware, but all is working well. Performance has been phenomenal. Routing is pretty much perfect, latency is great, and no complaints from my household.
This is a superior product and I highly recommend it.
One of the standout features of this device is its incredibly low power consumption - it uses only roughly 5 watts of energy, making it an energy-efficient and eco-friendly option for any home. Additionally, the community support for this router is fantastic, with an active online community of users who are always happy to help troubleshoot any issues.
The underlying Vyatta-based OS is also very flexible, allowing you to customize and configure your network to your specific needs. I particularly love that you can even install your own DNS-based adblocking software, which helps keep my browsing experience clean and streamlined.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X. Its impressive performance, small form factor, low power consumption, and excellent community support make it a standout router that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a top-notch networking solution for their home.
I specifically went this route (pun intended) when I started realizing just how risky IoT (internet of things) devices are when you plug them into your home network. This includes things like Alexa, Firestick, ChromeCast, Roku, wireless thermostats and all of those wireless remote control gizmos you can get now. With a router like this one, you can setup all sorts of very specific firewall rules, and allow or deny specific access as you see fit. Although the mainstream 'plug and play' sort of consumer grade wireless routers come with varying degrees of ability to do this, I have found that you don't get the complete flexibility needed with those solutions.
Primarily I used this device to divide up my home network into what are called virtual networks (VLANs). This concept was new to me but not difficult to learn about from the internet. By setting up VLANs, you can create isolation between the the various devices and PCs on your network. The VLAN concept apparently has been around for quite some time so there is a huge amount of information on it, how to set it up, etc via forums, YouTube videos, and all the regular channels.
A disclaimer though. Setting up a network as I described above takes a little know how so this solution may not be for you unless either you have some of this experience or are willing to get that help from someone else.
For the wireless access point, you can marry this to something like one of Ubiquity's Unify access points (such as the UAP-AC-LR-US). I opted for a TP-LInk AC1750 access point (EAP245) myself as it was a little less expensive and claims to have a faster 5GHz band rate (1300 vs 867 Mbps).
So, overall I really like this router, would buy it again and have been recommending it to others.

I've removed one star for versatility, because unfortunately, Ubiquiti does not recognize the Edgerouter series as a 'gateway' in the Unifi controller, and it has to be configured standalone, or through a separate cloud service called 'UISP'. If you want to integrate your router into your Unifi controller, you need to go with the Unifi Dream Router or Unifi Express. Hopefully this changes in the future.
