VMware extends VCP550D exam deadline again, provides VCP6 discount

VMware has just announced good news for many VCP’s and procrastinators alike by extending the VMware VCP550D Delta Exam from March 10, 2015 to May 8, 2015!

It seems VMware had some issues with the myLean system over this last weekend as well as some partners of VMware expressed concern that the initial deadline (Nov 30, 2014) and first extension (March 10, 2015) was not enough notice and asked for another extension so they (the partners) could schedule time to have their VCP’s re-certified.

If you haven’t taken the VCP550D exam yet, I’m compiled a list of topics to study in my VMware delta exam passed post.

VCP6 65% discount

For those who DID take the VCP550D delta exam before March 10, 2015, VMware wants to reward you with a 65% discount (normal price is $225) on the VCP6 migration exam which will of course upgrade you certification to VCP6. In order to make use of this VCP6 65% discount you must take the exam by August 31, 2015. VMware will be contacting users directly with more details on how to claim this discount.

  • How to fix “SRA command discoverArrays failed” in SRM with RecoverPoint

    Recoverpoint SRA command discoverArrays failed

    We’ve ran into an issue trying to get VMware SRM and SRA 2.2.0.3 along with EMC Recoverpoint 4.1.2 to communicate with one another and would receive this error in SRM:

    SRA command discoverArrays failed. Failed opening session for user to site mgmt IP.

    Please see server logs for further details.

    After some digging around a bit and talking with the Storage Team and EMC we found out that this is due to the SRA’s using HTTP by default and Recoverpoint 4.1.2 does not accept HTTP, but instead only accepts HTTPS or port 443. The steps below is how to get everything to default HTTPS and then communication will resume.

    If you don’t already know, VMware Update Manager (aka, VUM) is a tool which allows you to easily automate patching and upgrading VMware hosts as well as virtual machine hardware and VMware tools. It’s a wonderful tool and makes upgrading and patching so much easier and allows you to quickly see how compliant/up-to-date your environment is with the built in pie graph.

    Recently we had some pretty serious array issues which corrupted the VUM database taking Update Manager down. Since we was going to have to rebuild Update Manager I opted to move from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012, in the steps below I’ll document step by step how to install VMware Update Manager 5.5 on Server 2012 and a separate database.

  • My VMware View Windows 7 Optimization Guide

    These are the few steps I do when creating a new "Golden" image. Luckily I don’t have to do these steps all the time as I’ll create the "Golden" image when there is a new upgrade such as when we went from View 4.6 to View 5.0.1. I like to have a new fresh machine using new virtual hardware from the start. You could certainly just upgrade the virtual hardware on the "Golden" image, I just prefer to start clean.

    At any rate, here’s my list. Hopefully someone might find it somewhat useful and maybe even others can improve upon it.

    Preparing a new virtual machine

    1. Create New Virtual Machine – FILE > NEW > VIRTUAL MACHINE (CTRL+N)
    2. Under Configuration select CUSTOM.
    3. Select a Name, Folder, Host, Cluster, and Storage.
    4. Under Guest Operating System select Windows and then Windows 7 32bit under the Version drop down.
    5. Select which Network (VLAN) and under Adapter select VMXNET 3.
    6. Configure disk size to 30GB THIN provisioned.

  • VMware vCenter Server 5.5.0a update released

    VMware has released an update to vCenter 5.5 Server. The new updated, numbered 5.5.0a doesn’t appear to add any new features but instead focus on squishing a number of bugs in the 5.5 version – mostly around vCenter Single-Sign-On and the vSphere web client.

    Issues resolved with this release are as follows:

    1. Attempts to upgrade vCenter Single Sign-On (SSO) 5.1 Update 1 to version 5.5 might fail with error code 1603
    2. Attempts to log in to the vCenter Server might be unsuccessful after you upgrade from vCenter Server 5.1 to 5.5
    3. Unable to change the vCenter SSO administrator password on Windows in the vSphere Web Client after you upgrade to vCenter Server 5.5 or VCSA 5.5
    4. VPXD service might fail due to MS SQL database deadlock for the issues with VPXD queries that run on VPX_EVENT and VPX_EVENT_ARG tables
