Synology released DSM 5.1-5021 Update 2. This is a bug and vulnerability fix upgrade, such as upgrading NTP to version 4.2.8 to resolve multiple vulnerabilities. Other enhancements include stability on file-copying to USB drives as well as stability of QuickConnect connection to Surveillance Station.

Fixed Issues in DSM 5.1-5021 Update 2

  • Fixed an issue where the failure of photo indexing may occur when usernames contain special characters.
  • Upgraded BIOS to enhance SATA compatibility on RS3614xs and RS3614RPxs models.
  • Enhanced stability on file-copying to USB drives.
  • Upgraded NTP to version 4.2.8 to address multiple vulnerabilities (CVE-2014-9293, CVE-2014-9294, CVE-2014-9295, and CVE-2014-9296).
  • Enhanced the stability of QuickConnect connection to Surveillance Station.

You can download the Synology DSM 5.1-5021 Update 2 from the Synology Download Center or by logging into your Synology dashboard and going to: Control Panel > System > Update & Restore.

A little while ago I posted several ways to improve the security on your Synology NAS and was recently asked about how to install CrashPlan on a Synology NAS. Synology doesn’t have it’s own pre-built package available, but luckily PC Load Letter from the Synology community has stepped up and made a Synology package that works beautifully – the only downside is his instructions are a bit dated and I found harder than they needed to be.

Microsoft’s Convenience Update breaks VMware VMXNet3 vNICs

Microsoft recently pushed out a “Convenience Update“, a sort of rollup of rollups for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows 7 machines. This “Convenience Update” however comes with an incompatibility issue with VMware virtual machines that are using VMXNet3 network adapters, which causes the network to become unresponsive.

VMware Workstation 12.5.5 released, fixes Pwn2Own exploits

VMware has just released Workstation 12.5.5 which includes bug fixes as well as fixes for several vulnerabilities found in this years Pwn2Own contest, which two hacking teams, 360 Security (@mj011sec) and Team Sniper was able to successfully complete a virtual machine escape.

While these are serious exploits, VMware has said they are not aware of any active exploitation of the vulnerabilities that has now been fixed in 12.5.5.

With the release of VMware vCenter 6.5 Update 1 also comes VMware ESXi 6.5 Update 1 and just like vCenter there are a number of changes, updates, and fixes for ESXi as well in 6.5 Update 1 – you can see the release notes here.

Synology has just released DSM 5.2-5565 that’s been in beta for a while now but has finally left beta and ready for prime time!

DSM 5.2-5565 is packed with a load of new features such as Single Sign-On, iSCSI LUN Snapshots along with MANY new packages and package updates. Like Cloud Station now being able to sync files larger then 10GB! DSM 5.2 also introduces support for Docker!
